About us
Founded in 2016 by a group of IT and Business students, Kolibri Games is a mobile games studio based in Berlin, Germany. The company’s first title, Idle Miner Tycoon, which was developed in just eight weeks, has achieved over 100 million downloads worldwide as of 2021. Continuously refining its games for long-term success, Kolibri Games has since added several new titles to its growing product portfolio, and has also released on cloud gaming platforms. In February 2020, Kolibri Games was acquired by French gaming giant Ubisoft. The company’s games have been downloaded millions of times by players around the world, establishing Kolibri Games as a leader in the idle genre, and enabling the company to grow to more than 140 “Kolibris”.
Kolibri Games’ exceptional growth story has been recognized several times: LinkedIn added the company to the 2018 and 2019 list of Top 25 startups in Germany; Red Herring placed Kolibri Games among the 2018 Top 100 Global and Deloitte awarded the company with a first place in the “Rising Stars” category of 2018’s Deloitte Technology Fast 50.

New colors – same company
historyThe company changes its name to Kolibri Games. Fluffy Fairy Games was an ideal name for the takeoff. The almost emblematically funny and friendly name, loved by employees and players alike, expressed the company’s aspiration to make games for absolutely everyone. Now, with eight-figure revenues and over 80 employees, the company needs a name that better reflects its essence and underlines its status as a serious contender in the gaming industry. Kolibri Games is perfect as it represents the company’s agile, lean and fast moving character.

As a reaction to the achievements of the past months, and as part of a larger growth offensive, the team that has grown to over 75 is expanded even further. The company is well on its way of achieving its goal: releasing five successful games in the idle genre, within five years.

Let’s move to Berlin
historyAfter one year, the office in the center of Karlsruhe is too small for the now 35 talented people. In order to accommodate the steady growth, and to keep adding new faces, the company moves to Berlin-Kreuzberg. Here, 1.000 square meters give room to all developers, programmers, artists, and game designers. The move boosts the company’s growth: In the German capital, Fluffy Fairy Games gets five times as many applicants as before.

What a year
historyAlthough being already highly profitable, the company decides to take the next big step: marketing… and it pays off. With the help of the newly set up marketing team daily download numbers for Idle Miner Tycoon climb to over 110.000 on average. Partly thanks to these marketing efforts the company ends its second year having skyrocketed the annual revenue to over 10 million euros.

Fluffy Fairy Games leaves the nest
historyIn order to meet growing demands, the small team has to be expanded. The living room as an office, sleeping in the bathroom, and job interviews in the bedroom – the shared student flat is no longer an appropriate workplace. The team is now so big that the strange activity in the apartment attracts the landlord’s attention. The search for a proper, bigger office begins… and is successful: The company moves to the city center.

The birth of Idle Miner Tycoon
historyThe founders have a passion for mobile games and aim to enter the market with a revolutionary product: a really accessible idle game, that is oriented towards the players’ needs right from the beginning. After only eight weeks of development, following a lean approach, the team launches Idle Miner Tycoon. The goal is to first create a “minimum viable product” (MVP), which is a cut-down version of the game reduced to the core mechanics. Should this version prove popular, it will be further developed based on player feedback.

The Founding Days
historyKolibri Games is founded, without external financing, by a group of students in their shared flat as Fluffy Fairy Games. The founders had met during their studies at the KIT (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie) and had previously been active in startups, together and individually. All love the game Clash of Clans, and after finding out that the game generates over a billion dollars in revenue, they decide to make a childhood dream come true: making games.
