We started our journey to carbon neutrality by tracking and measuring our company’s overall carbon footprint. This approach provided us with in-depth insights into our direct and indirect emissions.

Once we had a full picture of our carbon output across all sectors of operations, and having developed a long-term reduction roadmap, we made contributions to reforestation projects around the world.

Sichuan Rural Poor-Household Biogas Development Project, China

Despite significant efforts by the Chinese government to address poverty, it remains a large problem in rural China. The majority of the population is employed in agriculture. Produce is often only sold in local villages and areas with commercial agriculture are struggling with a decline in prices due to the oversupply that has arisen, combined with a loss of income for producers. Most low-income, rural households in China use open wood and coal stoves to heat the home and to cook. The smoke and soot produced is not only bad for the environment, but can also have severe health consequences, especially for women and children who spend more time in the household.
The Sichuan Household Biogas Program is a Program of Activities (PoA) that provides biogas digesters and cookstoves to low income households in Sichuan Province, China. By switching to biogas cookers, households no longer need to burn firewood and coal, improving the air quality inside the home by generating clean and permanently available energy. The biogas digesters are provided to smallholder farmers who own livestock. Manure from the livestock can be collected and stored in these biodigesters, capturing the methane emissions and converting this as a source of renewable energy for neighbouring households. Not only does this provide a more hygienic solution to disposing of manure, this offers a clean and affordable source of energy for rural homes, thereby reducing fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The biomass by-product can be used on farmers’ fields instead of pesticides or chemical fertilisers. The program also generates additional income for the participating households and provides technical training for the users and annual maintenance. If well maintained, a biogas digester can last up to 28 years.
This programme has so far provided 400,000 smallholders with biogas plants, benefiting around 1.2 million people. Annually, this saves 2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent of methane and carbon dioxide from each household, for a total reduction of 800,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. The project is registered under both the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and the Gold Standard and makes a certified contribution to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 1 to 10 as well as 12, 13,15, and 17.

REDD+ Project, Andean Amazon, Peru

In 2019, it was measured that the Andean Rainforest is losing prime forest at a rate of three football fields a minute. This REDD+ project conserves 182,000 hectares of one of the most threatened ecosystems in the tropical, Peruvian Amazon, through forest management and community programmes. Protecting this area is of critical importance to the survival of Peru’s endemic fauna and flora and creates 515,000 tonnes of emission reductions each year.
Even with the protection of the Peruvian government as one of the nation’s Natural Protected Areas, the project area faces intense deforestation, pressure from illegal logging and unsustainable farming practices. Since the mid 1990’s a boom in coffee prices has led to surging coffee production and until the implementation of the project in 2008, led to 4000 hectares (7,000 football fields) of land being cleared each year. Voluntary conservation agreements with families living in the region have halted deforestation, in exchange for ecological agriculture training, organizational capacity building, Fair Trade certification, and market linkages that have transformed their livelihoods.
The project works to provide land security for the families that inhabit the forest and is establishing new approaches to sustainable farming, primarily in the coffee supply chain. Through conservation agreements, communities receive direct technical assistance aimed at improving ecological health and crop yields. The project is helping farmers to realize the economic value of forest protection and modelling a sustainable development pathway for the Government of Peru and civil society stakeholders, who view this project as a leading example of how REDD+ can support the country’s broader conservation.
This project benefits both local communities and protects threatened biodiversity and wildlife habitat. The project is accredited under Voluntary Carbon (VCS) and Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards. REDD+ is an acronym for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. United Nations REDD+ projects pursue long-term strategies for addressing the underlying causes of deforestation and degradation.

Cookstoves for Coffee Farmers Project, Ethiopia

Ethiopia's most important economic commodity is coffee, which accounts for a large proportion of its exports. However, it is very sensitive to rising temperatures - an increase of one degree already leads to a loss of quality of the coffee beans, an increase of two degrees to a loss of productivity. Deforestation and climate change thus have a major impact on the coffee sector in Ethiopia.
The project presented here collaborates with Fairtrade Netherlands to reduce the deforestation of local forests by distributing cleaner cookstoves to households of rural coffee farmers in Ethiopia. This includes a cookstove each for general use and one for baking injera, a round flatbread made from teff flour. This will reduce wood consumption as fuel for cooking and the associated carbon emissions by 40%. In addition, reducing smoke inside the houses improves air quality and thus the health of those affected. The coffee farmers pay for the stoves partly in cash and partly with the carbon credits that their use yields.
Thanks to the project, 12,000 efficient cooking stoves have been installed, preventing the deforestation and burning of 25,000 kilograms of wood. This corresponds to a saving of 40,000 tons of CO2e into the atmosphere.
This project is certified under both the Gold Standard and the Fairtrade Climate Standard. The Fairtrade Climate Standard ensures that revenue from the sale of Fairtrade or carbon credits covers the cost of the project. Local households hold the carbon credits to pay off their cookstoves. Additional funds from the sale of the carbon credits are managed by the local cooperative and invested in climate adaptation activities. Local communities initiate projects like this themselves, provide training and take care of the maintenance of the cookstoves.
